17. Eris – I’m done.

I’m embarrassed and a little bitter.

I’ve been lying in bed, self-wallowing about that stupid dinner with Papa and Kirill all day. More specifically, how Diavolo treated me after promising he’d show me respect in front of him.

Not only did he insinuate that I was with him sexually, but he made it obvious that that is all we’ve ever been. I couldn’t look Papa in the eye after that.

He raised me better than this.

To respect myself and my body. And to not let a man control me. I’ve let Diavolo get away with a lot of things I shouldn’t have. My stupid heart fell for him, and now I’m a warm body he uses and discards when he’s done.

Meeko pops his head up to look over my shoulder and growls at whoever decided to come into my room. I don’t care to roll over and face my friends' pitiful expressions. I’ve had enough of that with every check-in they’ve done so far.

The bed dips behind me, further pissing Meeko off. I’m only confused by his outburst for a second before I’m engulfed in the spicy rum scent of the devil as he pulls me into his arms.

He never lays down with me. Only stiff cuddles in seated positions here and there are the bare minimum he’s allowed himself to give up until now.

“Talk to me,” Diavolo murmurs against my neck.

A small shiver zips along my spine when his lips press to my pulse point in a soft kiss. This isn’t fair. He always pulls me in when I step back from him. It’s a vicious cycle we’ve gotten ourselves into. The more I want him, the less he wants me. The less I want him, the more he wants me.

“Baby, I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings,” he softly apologizes but I don’t believe him. “I told you that I wouldn’t pretend to be someone else or do as your Papa wanted. I realize I may have been too blunt.”

“You embarrassed me, Diavolo,” I whisper, too tired to raise my voice. “Papa wasn’t supposed to know I wasn’t a virgin anymore. I figured you knew that. But still, making it obvious that all you’ve allowed us to be is sex, is not something my papa needed to know.”

“I…”

“You promised you’d show me respect in front of him. One fucking night of you pretending to be a man that values the women you involve yourself with shouldn’t be so goddamn hard.”

“I do value women,” he fires back.

His body is tense against mine now, probably not liking being told how shitty he is, but no one else puts him in his place. Except me.

“Every woman but me, right?” I ask through the dumb tears rolling down my cheeks.

Meeko rushes to my aid and uses his little hands to wipe them away. Sweet buddy. At least he cares.

“Eris, I do value you,” he softens his tone and rolls me over.

I watch as his lips turn down into a frown at the state I’m in.
